As an organization dedicated to promoting social and economic equity, the Urban League of Portland has been an invaluable partner in our mission to create lasting growth and equity in the community. For years, we’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact this organization has on the lives of individuals and families, particularly those from historically marginalized groups.

A Legacy of Empowerment

The Urban League of Portland has a rich history rooted in advocacy and support. Established in 1945, it has consistently focused on uplifting the African American community and other communities of color in the Portland Metro area. Today, they employ 165 people from our community who are dedicated to making our community better. Their commitment to provide housing, senior services, education, and health services aligns perfectly with our own goals, making collaboration both natural and powerful.

Through various initiatives, the Urban League addresses systemic barriers that hinder access to opportunities. Their work in job training, financial literacy, and educational support not only empowers individuals but also strengthens the entire community. As partners, we have been able to amplify these efforts, providing additional resources and support that enhance the League’s programs.

Collaborative Programs that Make a Difference

One area of focus they are particularly proud of is their record of developing low cost, high opportunity housing in the greater Portland area. Their housing programs have solidified Urban League as an important co-developer for housing and supporting services. This push into affordable housing is a key initiative of their leadership team and they are currently co-developing 230 units of affordable housing as part of the city’s Broadway Corridor project.

We have supported the Urban League’s in several ways over the years. The essence of this partnership is one of collaborative exploration of the needs-based services that are part of the programming offered to Urban League clients. Rivermark is one of the credit union leaders to help foster financial wellness and education in the broader community. Together, we’ve developed specific services tailored to Black Oregonians’ unique needs, so they can reach their financial goals and thrive as community members.

“Rivermark has been a key partner for Urban League of Portland. We count on Rivermark for worldclass financial services centered right here in our community. Rivermark’s steady hand and forward looking leadership allows us to do the big projects while serving individual community members, and we are so grateful Rivermark is in our community and our key financial service partner,” says Urban League Vice President Julia Delgado.

Building Community Connections

The Urban League of Portland excels at fostering connections within the community. Through events, workshops and forums, they create spaces for dialogue and collaboration. Our partnership has allowed us to co-host events that focus on issues such as health equity, financial empowerment, and educational access. These gatherings not only provide valuable information but also cultivate a sense of belonging and solidarity among attendees.

The League’s commitment to uplifting youth through mentorship and scholarship programs is particularly inspiring. Together, we have developed initiatives that encourage young people to pursue higher education and professional development. By investing in the next generation, we’re helping to create a more equitable future.

A Shared Vision for the Future

As we look ahead, our partnership with the Urban League of Portland remains steadfast. We are committed to continuing our collaboration in tackling the complex challenges our community faces. Whether through advocacy, education, or economic development, we believe that together, we can create a more just and equitable society.
