Who is the Soul District Business Association?

The Soul District Business Association (SDBA), originally founded in 1977 as the North/Northeast Business Association (NNEBA), represents a vibrant and diverse business district in Portland. Their goal is to create multigenerational wealth and ensure that Black businesses not only survive but thrive in a rapidly changing economic landscape. For over four decades, SDBA has been committed to advocating for economic opportunities within our community, with a strong emphasis on supporting historically marginalized and Black entrepreneurs and business owners. The SDBA's work is centered around providing culturally specific technical assistance and fostering economic empowerment through their Business Impact Group (BIG).

Their programs are designed to address the unique challenges faced by Black and minority-owned businesses in North and Northeast Portland, helping them navigate complex business systems, build effective networks, and develop the legal and financial acumen necessary for success. SDBA offers a range of services, including one-on-one business assessments, training in credit education and fiscal management, and programs aimed at building business confidence through culturally responsive methodologies.

The SDBA was created in response to the growing need for a unified voice advocating for economic equity in Portland's inner-North and Northeast neighborhoods. As city planners and developers overlooked the importance of culturally responsive business district leadership, SDBA founders recognized the critical need to support Black businesses that were being systematically displaced and marginalized. Over the years, despite significant challenges, the SDBA has maintained a strong presence.

As a result, this “umbrella district” is one of the largest and oldest business districts in the City of Portland and the State of Oregon. They boast an average of 300-500 active members annually and are continually growing.

Their geographical boundaries extend South to North from N/NE Broadway to N/NE Columbia, and East to West from NE 33rd Avenue to N Interstate. They also encompass the Moda Center Corridor.

How does Rivermark partner with the Soul District?

Rivermark became involved with SDBA through a shared commitment to supporting local businesses and promoting economic equity within Portland's diverse communities. The partnership began after a meeting with our executive staff, where discussions focused on the struggles that minority-owned businesses often face, particularly in accessing capital. After introducing SDBA to our team, we developed a referral system to identify these businesses and help them secure the funding that traditionally would be difficult to obtain.

Today, SDBA partners with Rivermark by collaborating on initiatives that provide financial education, business development resources, and networking opportunities to Black and minority-owned businesses. This partnership involves co-hosting events, workshops, and training sessions that are tailored to the unique needs of the community. Additionally, Rivermark works directly with SDBA's business owners to address any of their business banking needs, ensuring they have access to the tools and support necessary for long-term success.

“Our partnership with Rivermark has been instrumental in expanding our ability to support Black and minority-owned businesses in Portland. Together, we are working to break down barriers to economic opportunity, providing the resources and education necessary to create lasting change within our community,” said a representative at Soul District.

What other community partners does the Soul District have?

The Soul District partners with a variety of other organizations, businesses, and community leaders who share their mission of promoting economic empowerment for Black and minority-owned businesses. These partnerships extend to local government entities, nonprofit organizations, financial institutions, and community groups that are dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive business ecosystem in Portland.

SDBA also plans an MLK Dream Run each year, which we sponsor each fall. The MLK Dream Run is an annual fundraiser that supports their Small Business Training and Youth Entrepreneurship Programs. On Saturdays, they have live entertainment, food, drinks, their Soul-Fun vendor market and chances to win great raffle prizes. On Sundays, you can enjoy a run or walk with your friends through Soul District or race for a chance to win huge prizes.

The Soul District Business Association is a voice, advocate, facilitator and catalyst for approximately 5,000 businesses and 64,000 residents within their district boundaries. We are proud to partner with an organization that aims to uplift our community so greatly and look forward to future projects and programs to support local business members.
